Escaping the Shackles

A True Survivor’s Tale

Julian Hadlow

A WWII Era Story of True Grit

Joseph’s heroism and perseverance to fight against the odds is a message for our times and all of humanity.

  • Civil unrest and violence in Eastern Europe in the 1920’s and 1930’s persuades a young Joseph to become a wartime spy, saboteur, and insurgent.
  • Captured by the authorities, he is then beaten for 62 days. He will only submit when he is forced to watch his own mother being flogged.
  • Sickened to his heart, he is coerced into signing his own death warrant. Incarcerated once more, the young saboteur awaits his sentence of execution by firing squad.

  • A good-looking young man, Joseph is helped along the way by several young women who become enamored by him and his musical talents. One by one, they assist him against the authorities along his eventual road to freedom.
  • Joseph soon realizes that to truly escape captivity, he must use the only ‘tools’ still available to him—his passion for music, and his beloved accordion.
  • However, his struggle for liberty in the West is in jeopardy when he is forced to become a spy for the Axis powers.
  • Joseph must now decide whether to leave his cherished homeland, taking his life into his own hands, or stay with Anna for an uncertain future.
